Neva Louise Chastain (1927-2025)
Neva Louise Chastain, 97, passed away on Jan. 6, 2025, at Riverview Estates in Marquette, Kan. Neva was born July 6, 1927, at home outside of Greensburg, Kan., the daughter of Ellis Lyndon and Nettie Irene (Shuck) Peck. She was the third of six children, being born just minutes before her twin sister, Nina. She grew up on a farm east Greensburg.
When Neva was 18, she moved to Dodge City, Kan., to work for the telephone company. It was on her travels by bus to visit home where she met Frank Chastain. Frank, along with his twin brother, John, were ticket agents for Continental Trailways Bus Co., where Neva would catch the bus home. Frank and Neva married on Jan. 1, 1951, at her parents’ home in Greensburg. They lived in Dodge City before moving to Hutchinson, Kan.
Neva was a mother, housewife and friend to many and willing to go the extra mile for others, with a cheerful heart. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Silver Leaf Chapter.
She was also a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader. Neva loved to cook, sew, embroider and make tied quilts for many family and friends.
Neva was a member of the Hutchinson First United Methodist Church before transferring to the Ellsworth Methodist Church when she moved to Ellsworth in 2008. She loved the Lord and made sure that even though Frank had to work every Sunday, she got her children to church each week. She loved her Sunday school classes and the many friends there.
After Frank passed away in 2010, she moved to The Pines Apartments where she made many friends. In May 2024, Neva moved to Riverview Estates in Marquette. She was always so appreciative of everyone and all that they did for her and all that they meant to her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Frank; siblings Ruth Scott, Freda Parcel, Nina Poplinger, Robert Peck and Harold “Merlin” Peck.
Neva is survived by her children, Cheryl (Greg) Reece, Wesley (Brenda) Chastain and Jan (Brian) Bontrager; sister-in-law Mona Peck; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
