MINNEAPOLIS — On April 15, the Ellsworth High School golf team had a day of medals, beautiful weather and multiple personal records at the Minneapolis High School Golf Invitational.
For the first time since discussion began of Ellsworth County Medical Center’s $2.1 million rehabilitation department relocation project, an artist’s rendering was shown at the April 16 meeting of the hospital board of directors.
After discussion Monday night, the Ellsworth-Kanopolis-Geneseo USD 327 Board of Education eliminated Career and Technical Education fees during its regular monthly meeting.

Denny E. Helvey, 92, of Salina, Kan., formerly of Ellsworth, Kan., and Hunter, Kan., passed away on Sunday, March 30, 2025.
Alice Jean Kaufman, 95, passed away March 31, 2025. She was born on Dec. 23, 1929, in Wilson, Kan., to Henry and Anna (Steinle) Major. She graduated from Dorrance High School in 1947. She attended Kansas State University earning a degree in childhood development, and later taught home economics at Dorrance High School. Alice Jean married Francis Kaufman in 1950.
Devon Lee Modrow, 26, of Independence, Mo., passed away on March 23, 2025, at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence, Mo. He was born on March 30, 1998, in Salina, Kan.
Trevin John Behnke, 21, passed away March 25, 2025, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kan. He was a sweet, caring little boy, born on Sept. 23, 2003, at the Rice County District Hospital, Lyons, Kan., to Christopher Behnke and Christle Estabrook. At the age of 1 1/2, he and his brother, Colin, began living with their grandparents, Robert and Carolyn Behnke.

The Ellsworth girls’ track team placed third at their home meet April 15.
The ubiquitous image of a farm includes a red barn, which historically took that shade because iron oxide, or rust, was added to the linseed oil to prevent mold and fungus. It also added the red hue that became synonymous with barns. Despite a wide variety of pigments to choose from today, tradition still means there’s plenty of red barns across the countryside.
